New TweedWATCH Education Pack Brings the River Tweed to Life for Schools

A brand-new Education Pack turns the River Tweed and its landscapes into an inspiring outdoor classroom for KS2 and Second Level learners.

A brand-new Education Pack is published, turning the River Tweed and its landscapes into an inspiring outdoor classroom for KS2 and Second Level learners. Packed with hands-on activities, lesson plans and beautifully designed resources, the free pack is a new resource for teachers to help pupils explore river wildlife, woodlands, plants, pollution and the rich heritage of the Tweed river catchment.

The pack has been developed by project partners at Tweed Forum through the Destination Tweed and EU LIFE WADER projects, in partnership with local schools, teachers and pupils who have helped to shape and test the resources and ideas in the pack over the last three years through workshops and trial lessons. The pack supports teachers to take learning outdoors and build children’s confidence, curiosity and connection with nature. Fully curriculum-linked and adaptable for use in school grounds or any local greenspace, it offers an engaging way for young people to understand how rivers work, why they matter and how we can protect them for the future.

The Education Pack is free to download from the TweedWATCH website here: TweedWATCH Education Pack.

A limited number of printed packs are also being offered to eligible schools in the Scottish Borders and to those within 2km of the River Tweed in north Northumberland, helping to ensure the resource reaches classrooms right across the catchment.

We hope the pack will be picked up by schools locally and nationwide as an exemplar of good practice.

Invasive Species
Targeting invasive species across the riparian (riverbank), coastal and marine areas of Northumberland and the Tweed Estuary, WADER is exploring new and innovative non-chemical ways of removing and controlling new and existing invasive species and protecting native species and sensitive habitats from their encroachment. Find out more about this activity.
Demonstration Projects
In addition to our core project work, WADER will also pilot innovative approaches to reduce diffuse pollution, manage invasive species, tackle macroalgae and reduce wildlife disturbance through a series of demonstration activities in partnership with various landowners and stakeholders.
