Demonstration Projects

Trialing novel techniques and approaches, never or rarely tried in the locality (or even elsewhere in the world), is a key part of WADER.

In addition to our core project work, WADER will also pilot innovative approaches to reduce diffuse pollution, manage invasive species, tackle macroalgae and reduce wildlife disturbance through a series of demonstration activities in partnership with various landowners and stakeholders. This will create a shareable ‘toolkit’ of novel techniques for nature recovery to improve and inspire sustainable land management and create a ripple effect of good practice – locally, nationally and even internationally.

Friesian Cows
One of the main concerns farmers raise about planting along watercourses is that livestock often depend on rivers for drinking water. To overcome this, WADER is trialling the use of solar-powered water troughs. Find out more about this project.
Bioboard
WADER is trialling an innovative solution in the Tweed catchment - Trico, a new spray made from emulsified sheep’s fat, which, when applied to saplings discourages animals from browsing due to its unappealing smell and taste. Find out more about this project.
Between March and July 2024, WADER installed chestnut pilings around an area of foreshore on the Northumberland Coast to protect the dunes, reduce wave impact and facilitate sand accretion. Found out more about this project.
Farm Yard Manure in Field
Adding farmyard manure to fields is a low intensity soil management approach that can have multiple soil health benefits. Find out more about this project.
Soil Analysis
Cover crops are plants that are used to cover and fortify soil rather than be harvested. Find out how we are utilising cover crops in our Demonstration Projects activity.

Other Activities

We are tackling five major issues with innovative solutions. This will allow nature to thrive and be resilient from source-to-sea – now and in the future and especially in the context of a changing climate.
Wildlife Disturbance Activity
Lindisfarne National Nature Reserve is receiving additional support from the LIFE WADER project to help them in their mission to reduce wildlife disturbance. Find out more about this activity.
Water Quality
