Dune Invasives

The dunes at Bamburgh on the Northumberland Coast are being engulfed by a rapid spread of invasive species.

The network of sand dunes on the Northumberland coastline is of national significance, harbouring rare native plants as well as providing important habitats for insects, reptiles and birds. Furthermore, it shelters inland areas from coastal flooding and storms.

In many areas invasive species are consuming them – interrupting their natural cycle of movement and crowding out the previously rich native flora and fauna. Invasive species are one of the top five drivers of biodiversity loss worldwide, and without intervention these majestic Northumberland dunes will become completely engulfed, endangering many native species.

LIFE WADER is working in partnership with volunteers from Northumberland Coast National Landscape Conservation Team to help eradicate Ivy, Sea Buckthorn, Snowberry and Blackthorn from the dunes.
